The real fun begins when you start to look at all the phenomenal performance options that await you, as you browse through all the upcoming shows, sifting through deals for New York City Broadway tickets.  Whittling down the list to one or two Broadway shows may be the only problem ahead of you in your search.  Here are a few kid-friendly favorites to stir some ideas.
“Matilda” at the Shubert Theatre
Roald Dahl’s beloved classic children’s book has sprung to life in this Broadway musical, which was originally adapted to the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Â With its recent March 2013 debut on Broadway, the musical stands a good chance of a long run, judging by its early success. Â Previously, Danny DeVito directed a cinematic version for the big screen in 1996, with Mara Wilson playing the role of Matilda. Â This timeless tale of a young girl’s precociousness, intelligence and imagination–all giving her the power to overcome her unpleasant parents, a frightening school atmosphere and a threatening head mistress–resonates with audience members of all ages. Â With a 2 hour, 40 minute running time, it’s a bit long, so prepare the kids for the single intermission and the sitting time they have ahead of them.
“The Lion King” at The Minskoff Theatre
Running since 1997, the multiple award-winning musical adaptation of the Disney classic is still one of the premier theatre experiences for kids and families. Â Track young Simba’s growth and progression toward becoming “The Lion King,” amid all the inhabitants of the highly plumed jungle, as it was imagined and brought to life by Julie Taymor. Â The beautiful spectacle of the costumes and movements, the famous Elton John songs, and Hans Zimmer’s score make this long-running program beloved season after season. Â Prepare for the kids for this 2 hour, 45 minute running time performance and note that there is one planned intermission.
“Newsies” at the Nederlander Theatre
Based on the actual teen newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City, this energetic Disney musical is a clear hit. Â This is an inspirational tale of young teens who took the chance to spark social change for other newsies around the country. Â Show your kids that taking risks to make change–seeking a fair wage for all in this case–is sometimes as important as one’s own comfort. Â This stage adaptation of the 1992 film of the same name has already earned two Tony awards and has critics and audiences cheering the performance as well as the musical’s success. Â Make sure everyone is ready for the 2 hour, 20 minute running time for this performance.
“Wicked” at the Gershwin Theatre
Can you imagine the Land of Oz long before Dorothy’s visit? Â “Wicked” tells you about that magical land. Â The story focuses on the coming-of-age phase for the Green Witch and Glinda the Good Witch, and just how different were their respective experiences. Â Enjoy this 2 hour, 45 minute performance with the whole family, especially pre-teen and teenage girls.
