Clinton Road: America’s Most Terrifying Road!

Posted on 12 October 2009

Through the town of West Milford, New Jersey runs Clinton Road.  Associated with paranormal occurrences for the past three centuries, the road runs in a North-South direction over its approximately 10-mile span beginning at Route 23 near the town of Newfoundland and ending at Upper Greenwood Lake.  In addition to the reports of Satanic cult practices and gatherings of witches, the desolate roadway has been rumored as a dumping grounds for victims of organized crime in the Garden State.

The video above was a segment from a Travel Channel series on the Most Terrifying  Places in AmericaWrite On New Jersey plans its own nocturnal investigation of the road.  Look for it in an upcoming article.

I went to Clinton Road October 1, 2010 at 10:30pm. Just about a mile north of RT 23 I saw a black pickup truck tailgating a car and flashing its lights. I went the entire length of the road, turned around and drove through a second time on my return trip. It’s a dangerous and scary road at night because there are no street lights and due to the urban legends. I plan on returning.

Five of my friend n I took the trip to Clinton rd Friday night (11-19-10), the road is just really dark, and has a bunch of turns which look like they can be deadly especially the one called dead mans curve. However to my disappointment and my friends we didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, no ghost truck, no ghost camaro, no witches (we even walked thur the woods a bit), no ghost boy at the bridge ( I lost a whole penny, wasting it throwing it down expecting it to come back), no demonic signs along the road either. The road was just a big let down.

    Hey Disappointed..

Not too worry..Consider yourself (as well as your friends lucky ) for clinton road is full of weird as well as strange happenings…A lot of what you hear is folk tale.. However many from West Milford know better…It is a rarely traveled road for good reasons….Most of the locals would never drive it at night..

I have seen more then a few things on clinton road over the decades…Do NOT expect to see something just because you were there “ONCE” ..

I lived up in Upper Greenwood lake and even lived on the end of clinton road itself..

Though i miss much of Greenword Lake,West Milford. I do NOT miss Clinton Road..

Back when i first lived there..Clinton road was still mostly a un-paved road..

I lived in a nearby town, at around 6pm at night I was heading to West Milford to check out a place to rent at the time and they told me directions going up Clinton Road. Not knowing the folklore at the time I had been driving up 23 and took the Clinton Road exit on the right. At first I thought it was weird that there was no traffic riding up or down the road. Then once the fog rolled in abruptly it was creepy. I did not see the truck behind me or anything like the tales tell, it just seemed like it took 45 minutes to get off and into the civilized part of the area. Then the fog went away immediately after turning onto the main part of the road inside West Milford.

i am a retired West Milford police officer…was on the force for 30 years. I never once had any issue on Clinton Road and i’ve driven it many, many times. There are a lot of ‘stories’ out there….

On Saturday October 8, 2011, well most people would consider it Sunday morning…. 4 frIends and I drove 2 hrs to Clinton road. Getting there at 2:30 am we drove along the rOad for about a mile or two when we stopped bc it was blocked off. We figured there had to be a way around to the other end, so we drove for bout an hour, including numerous u-turns and dead ends, until we finally reached the opposite end. We drove along, passed a car with other stupid teens like us and then turned around where it was cut off. The cut off was blocking a bridge known as dead mans curve. We were disappointed, so we turned around to go home only to see the same teens running towards their car. we stopped to ask them what they were up to, and their answer was the same as ours, “we heard about this road and decided to check it out”. We said Our goodbyes and headed on home. Unfortunately on my visit to Clinton road nothing paranormal happened to our knowledge but knowing my friends there will be many more opportunities for me to witness something paranormal on Clinton road in West Milford, NJ.

I went there on Tuesday, October 11th at 1 AM. The road was blocked off at the reservoir near 23 and I took Union Valley Road to the other end of Clinton, only to find it was blocked off too. Apparently, Hurrican Irene really hit the road hard so they are fixing it. But I will be back. And if any pussy Satanists or KKK members fuck with me, I’ll slit their throats.

  13. Andrew says:

Glad I came across this and read those last two comments. My friend and I were just about to leave and make the two hour trip there, but if the best part of the road is closed we will wait till another time.
